Contentment and Suffering
Published in Paperback by Columbia University Press (15 April, 1993)
Average review score:

A person-centered ethnographyTraditional ethnographies have generally focused on large scale aspects of a society's life. In a new approach, Hollan and Wellenkamp are innovating the field of psychological anthropology with ethnographies that focus on the commanalities as well as the differences found in individuals belonging to a particular culture, in this case the Toraja of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This methodology allows readers to understand what it is like to live in Tana Toraja as well as gain insight into the individual lives, not just the society as a whole. The components of the individuals' enculturation can be seen through larger cultural processes of socialization that affect everyone, but person-centered ethnography takes into account the uniqueness of people and that the same culture can lead to drastically different people with differing views on the same issue, despite being raised in the same cultural environment. Contentment and Suffering is well-organized and does not attack the reader with technical jargon. Yet its approach does not condescend to the reader. Its concise wording is direct yet never terse or curt.

Contract Issues for Emergency Physicians
Published in Paperback by Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (01 October, 2000)
Average review score:

Make an extra $30,000 by reading this bookThis book is a must read for ANY resident or practicing doctor. It really tells you what you need to get IN and OUT of your contract. What I liked about it was it presented the contract from both the employer and employee. It covers topics such as non-compete clauses, covenants, benefits, and malpractice insurance , just to name a few. Read this book before you start interviewing. While it was written for Emergency Medicine docs, it probably would help pediatricians, internists, and family practice docs a lot more. Highly recommend this book. It can be read in a couple days.

The Corporate Closet: The Professional Lives of Gay Men in America
Published in Hardcover by Free Press (December, 1993)
Average review score:

NO STRAIGHT PERSON SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO READ THIS BOOK EVER!This book is a study of the tactics that gay men use to keep their sexual orientation hidden from their (often homophobic) co-workers. It scares me how accurate it is. Let me give you an example, I once had a male teacher who said, "I was once going out with this woman who blah, blah, blah." Well, many straight people would think, "Okay, girlfriend equals straight." But a critical reader would see that the man said, "Once!" Many openly gay men used to date women. This book mentions tactics like acting weird so that co-workers just dismiss you as asexual, emphasizing your love of sports in order to hide the fact that you're not involved with a woman, being so liberal that when you mention gay rights co-workers think you are a leftist rather than gay, etc. If straight people read this book, gay men would never be able to hide. This book was both a gift and a weapon. Some have critiqued it asking why anyone would want to study, and subconsciously encourage, men to be closeted. However, this book does talk to men about their being out in the workplace and how they did it. We need more studies like this. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, it could be incredibly dangerous if placed in the wrong hands.

Could You Be a Mouse? (Ages 7 to 12)
Published in Hardcover by Ideals Childrens Books (September, 1990)
Average review score:

We think it's great!I was surprised to read the editorial review which regarded this book (and similar books) so poorly. We have 2 of these books (Survival - Could You Be A Frog? and the "Mouse" one of the same series.) My son (5 years old) thinks it's a lot of fun to play the "game" of survival and along the way you learn a lot of interesting facts about the animal. We find the book to be entertaining and challenging. It's a nice change from a regular book and it is very unique! We wish there were more books in the series.

The Cowboy and His Wayward Bride (Silhouette Special Edition, #1234)
Published in Paperback by Silhouette (March, 1999)
Average review score:

BeautifulI thought that this story of love separated by life desires was true to life and very sweet. Harlan Patrick became one of my favorite characters right at the beginning of Natural Born Lawman, and I was thrilled to hear that he had his own book. His heartache over losing his longtime love to the career she had ben dreaming about for years was very true to life, as many people sacrifice love for their dreams. But I was definately happy that their love survived and prospered. It was a wonderful book, and I hope that I can find many just as good.

The Cowgirl & the Unexpected Wedding (Silhouette Special Edition, 1208)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (November, 1998)
Average review score:

A great additon to the AND BABY MAKES THREE series!Sherryl Woods progresses the Adams' family bloodline into The Next Generation series of Baby Makes Three. In romance novels it is very rare that you can come into such an in depth series of family based storylines that tie generations together but also give each individual novel a life of its own. You can pick up the first book or the last book and enjoy it immensely with Woods' characters and plots, but when you continue with the series you feel a sense of family, belonging, and security in the circle of life. Well written and easy to follow and enjoy, I recommend this book highly to anyone.
